This book is part of the Thorn of Breland series (set in the broader Dungeons & Dragons world of Eberron). It is Book 1 in that specific trilogy.

Keith Baker is a white American game designer and author from the United States who lives with his wife and does not identify within the queer or LGBTQ+ community. He achieved something incredibly special by winning the prestigious Wizards of the Coast fantasy setting search in 2003 out of over 11,000 entries, officially creating the world-famous Eberron campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons.

themes: espionage, monsters, diplomacy, stolen artifacts, hidden identity, political tension, survival, undercover missions, loyalty, ancient magic

Yes, this book is highly appropriate for an audience between the ages of 13 to 16. It does not contain any explicit or non-explicit sex scenes, masturbation, or pornography in either text or pictures. The content consists entirely of standard young-adult fantasy violence, espionage suspense, and regular descriptions of monstrous creatures. Sent deep undercover into Droaam—a chaotic nation ruled entirely by monsters—royal spy Nyrielle Tam must successfully navigate a tense political summit while masquerading as a harmless envoy. Operating under the shadows of her codename, Thorn, her true mission is a high-stakes heist to steal back a priceless artifact taken by a lethal medusa queen. With one wrong move threatening to plunge her entire homeland into a devastating war, she must outsmart bloodthirsty beasts and master-manipulators before her cover is permanently blown.

themes: discipline, rivalry, dedication, friendship, martial arts, perseverance, mentorship, growth, teamwork, humor

Yes, this book is highly appropriate for an audience between the ages of 13 to 16, and it carries a standard Teen (T) rating from its English publisher, Viz Media. The book does not contain any explicit or non-explicit sex scenes, masturbation, or pornography in either pictures or words. Parents and educators should be aware that because it was written as an 1980s Japanese comedy manga, it contains a significant amount of juvenile, lowbrow, and dated humor. This includes standard slapstick cartoon violence, characters running around in their underwear, and frequent recurring jokes about Goku's total lack of understanding regarding basic human anatomy and the differences between boys and girls. Goku travels to a remote island to train under the legendary martial arts master Roshi, but he gets a rude awakening when a crafty monk-in-training named Krillin arrives to challenge him for the spot. Instead of learning secret ultimate attacks, the two boys are forced into a bizarre, exhausting daily routine of delivering milk on foot, tilling fields with their bare hands, and outrunning wild monsters. As the fierce rivals slowly transform into best friends, they must push past their absolute physical limits to prepare for the upcoming World Martial Arts Tournament.

themes: pandemic, body horror, music, vengeance, deception, puppets, survival, identity, tragedy, control

This book is appropriate for an audience between the ages of 13 to 17. It does not contain any explicit or non-explicit sex scenes, masturbation, or pornography in either its illustrations or its written words. However, because it belongs to the gothic horror genre, it does feature stylized fantasy violence, sword-and-gun combat, blood, and creepy body-horror transformations of humans turning into wooden puppets.
In a bleak world ravaged by a grotesque plague, infected humans are horrifyingly transformed into bloodthirsty, clockwork puppet dolls known as Guignols. Cordelia, a brilliant conductor, leads the Royal Orchestra—a specialized traveling troupe of beautiful musicians who use lethal, sound-infused weapons instead of standard instruments. Traveling from town to town, they perform a beautiful but deadly symphony designed to tear these mechanical monsters apart and save humanity from a living nightmare.

themes: love, luck, friendship, wealth, grief, greed, responsibility, change, family, addiction

Yes, this book is highly appropriate for an audience between the ages of 13 to 16. It does not contain any explicit or non-explicit sex scenes, masturbation, or pornography in either pictures or words. The romance is completely clean and limited to mild kissing, making it a safe choice for middle and high school readers, though it does maturely explore real-world struggles like a parent's gambling addiction and the grief of losing parents. Alice has been secretly in love with her best friend Teddy for years, so buying him a lottery ticket for his eighteenth birthday feels like a harmless, playful gesture. But when that exact ticket shockingly hits the $140 million jackpot, their normal lives are instantly turned upside down in a whirlwind of sudden fame and endless cash. As the money begins to create an undeniable rift between them, Alice must figure out if their relationship can survive the windfall or if true love is a prize that wealth simply cannot buy.

This book is part of a series. It is Volume One in the Indigenous Horror series (which is a spinoff of the UpRoute Indigenous Spirit of Nature imprint).

Alex Soop is a First Nations author and illustrator belonging to the Kainai (Blood) Nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy in southern Alberta, Canada, where his writing reflects authentic Indigenous oral traditions and contemporary social issues. He has not publicly identified as a member of the queer community, but he has achieved notable recognition for his powerful advocacy, using his debut fiction to spotlight critical real-world crises such as systemic racism and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).

themes: Systemic racism, intergenerational trauma, grief and loss, Indigenous folklore and oral tradition, the afterlife, survival, accountability, displacement.
An unlikely turn of events -- The wail of the wind -- Man of God -- A lively old merriment -- Spooked -- Across the bridge -- Mr. Knife -- The last house -- The edge of darkness. Step into the shadows of Turtle Island, where ancient First Nations legends collide head-on with modern, bloodcurdling terror. From vengeful ghosts lurking on the highway to monstrous entities waiting in the dark, these gripping tales reveal that the supernatural world isn't nearly as terrifying as the real-life horrors of systemic racism and hidden secrets. Open this book if you dare, but remember: once the midnight storm hits, some nightmares refuse to stay in the dark.
